Major Fernando Botero Retrospective at Palazzo Bonaparte

24 September 2024

We’re pleased to announce that Fernando Botero is the subject of a major retrospective at Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome, Italy. Presented in partnership with Arthemisia, this exhibition opened on 17 September, 2024 and will run through 19 January, 2025. This comprehensive survey–which is to date, the largest exhibition dedicated to Fernando Botero in Italy–features over 120 works including paintings, watercolours, charcoal drawings and sculpture that showcase Botero's remarkable career and contributions to contemporary art history. The exhibition is curated by Lina Botero, the artist's daughter, alongside Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz, a renowned authority on the artist's work.

With key works spanning the South American artist’s prolific career, from early groundbreaking developments of the artists’ signature ‘Boterismo’ aesthetic, to more recent works created before his death in September 2023, this comprehensive survey will also include a selection of previously unseen works.

In December 2023, Opera Gallery’s Miami location hosted 'Botero: A Love Letter to Latin America,' a solo exhibition honouring the artist that explored Latin America’s intrinsic role in shaping his oeuvre. As a visual poet of daily life, Botero’s pioneering figurative artworks, still life paintings and sculptures serve as vivid portrayals of the characters and scenes Botero encountered throughout his life. ‘Botero: A Love Letter to Latin America’ was a visual representation of the both subtle and deliberate influences of Latin American culture on Botero and conversely, Botero’s advocacy for Latin America’s representation within the canon of art history.   Palazzo Bonaparte is recognized for its commitment to showcasing leading artists, and this exhibition further cements Botero as a vital voice in the art world today.
