Pérez Art Museum Miami
05 November 2024

Opera Gallery is proud to announce Gustavo Nazareno’s participation in the group exhibition 'One Becomes Many' at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The exhibition runs from October 17 2024 to April 16 2026, and features work by ten prominent Black Brazilian artists. Curated by Jennifer Inacio, the show includes pieces by Emanoel Araújo, Mestre Didi, Sonia Gomes, Paulo Nazareth, Antonio Obá, Rosana Paulino, Hariel Revignet, Tadáskía, and Nádia Taquary alongside Nazareno.

'One Becomes Many' delves into the legacies of Black Brazilian artists across generations, showcasing traditional motifs, geometric abstractions, and a profound reverence for Brazilian culture. The exhibition explores two central themes: the narratives of identity and belonging, and the juxtaposition of historical complexities with contemporary realities of Afro-Brazilian communities. Artists draw inspiration from Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion blending West African traditions with elements of Roman Catholicism, paying homage to deities and ancestral spirits through ritual practices. The exhibition also examines themes of diaspora, sharing artists' experiences of displacement, survival, and cultural continuity.

This exhibition follows Gustavo Nazareno's first show with Opera Gallery, 'Orixás: Personal Tales on Portraiture', which marked the beginning of his global representation by the gallery. Nazareno's unique visual language blends influences from Renaissance masters like Caravaggio with contemporary fashion photography, creating a fusion of ancient and modern aesthetics. The exhibition celebrates the Orixás, deities of the Candomblé religion, while delving into themes of Blackness, resistance, mysticism, and the complexities of ancestry and diaspora.

Looking ahead, Nazareno's artistic journey continues to flourish. Following 'One Becomes Many', he will present a solo exhibition curated by Danny Dunson at The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center in Chicago, USA, in the spring of 2026. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that Nazareno's book Bará, has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Jabuti Award in the Graphic Design category. Published by Act. Publisher, Bará comprises 120 charcoal drawings conceived as a ceremony honouring the Orixá Exu. This remarkable work emerges from the artist's series of the same name, further showcasing his dedication to exploring Afro-Brazilian spirituality and culture through art.
