Botero in Rome

11 September 2024

In honour of the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero, who passed away on September 15, 2023, at 91 in Monaco, Rome is hosting a spectacular exhibition of eight monumental sculptures until October 1st. Botero, created these statues during his time in Italy, a country he deeply admired for its Renaissance masters. "Italy was always like a second home country for him," Lina Botero, the artist's daughter, shared with Italian television TV2000. The exhibition, titled 'Botero in Rome', is curated by Lina Botero and produced by the Fernando Botero Foundation in collaboration with Il Cigno GG Edizioni, BAM Eventi d'arte, and Il Cigno Arte.

The exhibition route spans several iconic Roman locations. Visitors can start at the Terrazza del Pincio, home to Lying Woman (2003) and Sleeping Venus (1994). The journey continues to Piazza del Popolo, where Standing Man (Adam) and Standing Woman (Eve) stand beside the Flaminian Obelisk. Along Via del Corso, one can admire the Horse with Bridle (2009) sculpture, while Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina hosts Gatto (1999). The tour concludes with two versions of Seated Woman (2000 and 1991) in Piazza San Silvestro and Piazza Mignanelli respectively.

To enhance the exhibition's visibility, a partnership with Urban Vision Group utilises maxi LEDs placed strategically around the city. These displays not only showcase the artworks but also guide visitors through the exhibition route, transforming chance encounters into opportunities for further exploration of Rome's piazzas and Botero's masterpieces.

Botero's distinctive style, often termed "Boterismo", is unmistakable in these bronze sculptures. His work is characterised by voluminous forms and exaggerated proportions, whether depicting human figures, animals, or objects. This unique approach lends his subjects a profound presence, making his art instantly recognisable and deeply impactful.

Beyond his artistic contributions, Botero was also known for his philanthropy. He frequently donated artworks to institutions and in support to humanitarian causes. In recognition of his generous contributions to the people of Colombia, the magazine Poder named him "Philanthropist of the Year" at the 2008 Global Philanthropy Forum in Miami.

Fernando Botero's legacy extends far beyond his unique visual language. His passion for art and ability to create work that resonates with people from all walks of life have secured him a permanent place in art history. As his works stand in Rome, they continue to inspire, provoke thought, and bring joy to audiences worldwide, ensuring that Botero's artistic vision will endure for generations to come.

Botero is represented worldwide including by Opera Gallery.
